Candy companies should take some responsibility for the problems caused by excess consumption of sugar, amongst which are obesity, diabetes and heart disease. This, at least, is what our very own Quality Candy Company believes, which is why it partnered with Global Biolife, to develop what they are calling “sugar 2.0”
This new form of sugar goes by the name of “laetose” but rather than simply replacing sugar, it was formulated to fight disease caused by excess sugar consumption as well. It is on par with standard sugar in terms of taste, texture and shelf life so replacement is no issue. Though it tastes exactly like traditional sugar, the true genius of the innovation is that it is better accepted by the body.
So how does laetose work? Insulin-mimetic is a naturally occurring compound in berries. When combined with sucrose, the result is a low calorie, low-glycemic sweetener that is better accepted by the body than traditional sugar. The way the body accepts laetose is very important because any product that uses traditional sugar can now be made to contain much less sugar without compromising quality.
If this sounds too good to be true, keep in mind that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognized it as generally safe. Very soon, laetose is expected be in retail products across the country. Despite its American origin, laetose has the potential to benefit people across the globe.
It will take at least a year until we start to see the overall effects of laetose in the market. Many confectionary manufacturers will be inclined to use a sweetener that is healthier for their consumers and doesn’t affect the taste of their products. There is no doubt, however, that laetose has the capability of revolutionizing the whole industry.
